Oxygen Servicing & Maintenance

Why Service Your Oxygen Equipment?

Oxygen Equipment
Having the best equipment is important.  It is just as important to ensure that it stays in the best possible condition.  That means regular maintenance.

Oxygen cylinders and equipment needs to be regularly serviced to ensure that all mechanical functions and parts are in proper working condition for the safety of employees. Oxygen Equipment should be serviced at least once every twelve months, or as recommended by your manufacturer, to ensure a healthier and safer workplace.

Some general rules for cleaning equipment are,
  • Discard any disposable parts.
  • Disassemble the equipment as appropriate
  • Pre-rinse the appropriate parts with cold, running water.
  • Wash appropriate parts thoroughly in warm water using a detergent that is compatible with the resuscitator materials. Careful scrubbing with a soft brush can be effective.
  • Rinse the parts thoroughly in clean, fresh water.
  • Immerse the parts in the sterilising solution for the time specified.
  • Rinse the parts thoroughly in clean fresh water
  • Dry all parts thoroughly
  • Reassemble the equipment
  • Test the Equipment after reassembly to ensure it operates correctly.

To ensure oxygen equipment is maintained appropriately,
  • Always ensure that the cylinder is full, and turned off, before storing.
  • De-pressurise the regulator before storing.
  • Keep oxygen equipment clean, dry and in a safe location.
  • Never allow oil, grease or other flammable substances to come into contact with the equipment.
  • Store in a well ventilated area, away from sources of head and combustible materials.
  • Check the contents of the cylinder and functioning of the equipment regularly.
  • Oxygen units should be inspected and serviced by an appropriately trained technician at regular intervals as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Only refill the cylinder at authorised and reputable dealers.
  • Cylinders must be visually and hydrostatically tested at least every 10 years. Ensure the cylinder is currently in test. If necessary, check with your gas supplier.
  • Thoroughly wash, disinfect and dry the mask and other appropriate parts after use.
  • Masks with an inflatable/inflated cuff should be replaced at the first sign of deterioration of the cuff.
  • Spare sealing washers (eg. Bodok seals) should be kept with the equipment.
  • Most cases may be cleaned with soap and water. However plastic cases should not be cleaned with substances that adversely affect plastic.
  • Consult the manufacturer’s literature for more specific maintenance instructions.
